RICHMOND, Ky., Jan. 11, 2018 — In a unique ribbon-cutting ceremony, Eastern Kentucky University President Michael Benson drove through the ribbon today as the university opens its first parking garage. EOP’s design resulted from the public-private partnership that financed the new residence halls and was constructed with neither tax nor tuition dollars.
“By design and purpose,” says EKU Executive Director of Public Safety and Risk Management Bryan G. Makinen, “the parking garage is open and well-lit, giving a sense of security.”
Rather than a typical structure, the new garage features mesh wood-like panels in a staggered pattern at varied heights for increased visibility and security. Each floor features emergency call boxes, security cameras and LED lighting. The garage includes space for over 360 visitors with two electric-vehicle charging stations and auto-pay kiosks.
